about

This is the third and final act of Ambigua. By no means an exhausting review of “interesting times” in music at the beginning of the 20th century, nor a historical account of artists and artworks that shaped modern music, it stands on its own as an homage to the era and its art. The questions remain the same, it's questioning the answers that we owe to the artist within.

Act III is Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4 (1899), a string sextet in one movement. Inspired by a poem by Richard Demhel, Schoenberg composed it in three weeks, at the age of 25. It is a perfect showcase of his uncanny skills in classic harmony. Clearly rooted in D minor, it often ventures far from this home key, using extreme chromaticism, undermining both conventional harmony and metric boundaries, signalling the new era that Schoenberg pioneered a few years later: the 12-tone, serial music system.

Every single little step to the future is set against the fear of the unknown. Pioneering artists are considered eccentrics, iconoclasts, devoid of talent or artistic nature, and systematically inhabit the margins of mainstream culture. Then time ensues and it fixes things. Art is a matter of circumstance, there are no timeless ethics, no rules, no absolute aesthetic values.

Ambigua invites diversity, exploration, free spirit and an open ear. It embraces all music that is original in shape and content, as the human imprint in a universal vibe we still struggle to grasp, a breath of “luft von anderem planeten” *

* "air from another planet”, from the poem Entrückung by Stefan George - "Der siebente Ring" (The Seventh Ring). Schoenberg composed his second String quartet inspired by it.
